The Hunger Games
The eponymous first instalment of the Hunger Games trilogy, this book introduces the reader to the troubled nation of Panem, located in a future post-apocalyptic North America. Panem demands that each of the 12 districts that surround it must offer it “tributes” in the form of two young competitors who must fight to the death in the annual Hunger Games.
Volunteering for the game in the place of her younger sister, Katniss is thrown into a deadly world where her life is at the mercy of the whims of the audience, and she must use all of her native cunning if she is to survive.
Catching Fire
With dissent against the Capitol brewing across the 12 districts of Panem, Katniss is by no means out of danger yet, and she finds herself becoming a focus for revolt throughout the land. She has attracted powerful enemies including President Snow, the dictator of Panem, who will stop at nothing to ensure that his despotic regime continues to keep the common man in his place.
Forced into the Games once again, Katniss faces her most deadly challenges yet both inside and outside of the arena.
Mockingjay
Led by a burning desire for vengeance against President Snow, Katniss reluctantly agrees to take on the symbolic mantle of the Mockingjay and act as a figurehead for an armed revolt by the districts on the Capitol. As she tries to fight for what is right and build a better future for her people, betrayal and deception threaten to destroy everything she has worked towards and plunge Panem into a future or more oppression and brutality.
Although she has escaped the Hunger Games for the present, Katniss must still keep her wits about her and be prepared to battle for her life against the hostile forces that assail her at every turn.
The Hunger Games Trilogy Movie Adaptations
The rights to The Hunger Games Trilogy have already been snapped up by Lionsgate Entertainment, and the first film in the planned series is scheduled for release in March 2012, with the second, Catching Fire , due to hit the cinema in November of the same year.
Suzanne Collins worked on the adaptation of Hunger Games herself, and Jennifer Lawrence will play the lead role of Katniss Everdeen. Woody Harrelson will play Katniss' mentor Haymitch Abernathy, and Donald Sutherland will take on the role of President Snow. Lenny Kravitz and Stanley Tucci will also appear in supporting roles.

Suzanne Collins has been writing for over twenty years, starting out by writing for children's television shows in the States such as Clarissa Explains it All, Little Bear and Oswald.
She soon branched out into young adult fiction, quickly making a name for herself on the darker end of the spectrum through her Underland Chronicles series, which featured the hero Gregor the Overlander and his adventures in a fantastic and dangerous kingdom deep beneath the streets of New York City .
Hunger Games , the first book in the series, was published in 2008. Collins has stated that she drew inspiration for her story from the Greek myth of the Minotaur, in which ancient Athens used a lottery system to choose young people to send to be devoured by the bull-headed beast.
The second book in the series, Catching Fire , hit the presses in 2009, and the Hunger Games Trilogy concluded with the publication of Mockingjay in 2010.
