The Millennium Trilogy Movie Adaptations

Such was the success of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy in his native Sweden that the film right for all three books were quickly snapped up by film studios. The movie trilogy was originally intended to open with an adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which would be shown in cinemas, then continued with TV movies of The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. However, the first film proved so popular that in the end all three novels were made into full-release cinema versions, which were released to much critical acclaim in 2009.

Fans of the series will be pleased to hear that Hollywood also has film versions of The Millennium Trilogy in the pipeline, with David Fincher (Seven, Zodiac) directing and Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace, Layer Cake) as Mikael and Rooney Mara (The Social Network) as Lisbeth.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is due for release in December 2011, with The Girl Who Played with Fire coming out in 2012 and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest hitting cinema screens in 2013.

Stieg Larsson: About the Author

Born in 1954, Stieg Larsson worked for the majority of his life as an investigative journalist who specialised in researching and campaigning against extreme right-wing race hate groups in his native Sweden.

At the age of 15, he reportedly witnessed the rape of a young girl in an attack which he was powerless to prevent. This event had a profound effect on Larsson, and led to his lifelong campaign to actively fight against oppression and violence and speak out for those who had no voice themselves.

The Millennium Trilogy was originally intended by Larsson to be a sequence of ten books – sadly, however, the author was struck down by a heart attack in 2004 at the age of 50, before the first novel in the series had been published.

Rumours abound that there may have been one or perhaps even two unfinished Millennium manuscripts found in Larsson’s personal effects after his death. No formal announcements have yet been made by his estate, and, because Larsson died without leaving a will, it could be some time before any new material is released.
